A Gothic tone is set by your use of dark, yet contrasting hues, both opaque and translucent with splashes of brighter colors to enliven an otherwise gloomy setting. This is an unconventional portrait of the beloved neck-nipper. Barnabas is recognizable and, by his clothing and stance, we realize that he is, indeed, an aristocrat. The inclusion of a blood-smeared book, a goblet of blood, and a raven straight from the "Nevermore" realm of E. A. Poe, all serve to heighten the macabre atmosphere. In addition to a cathedral-like rose window along with spectral imagery to Barnabas' left, these splendid details create a vision that is as invitingly poetical as it is chilling.
